The Stoney Creek Chamber of Commerce held its annual Citizen of the Year Awards on May 10th and honored seven outstanding citizens who have dedicated their time and energy toward excellence in community service, leadership, and exceptional business practice.
The National Gallery’s art competition, So You Want to Be an Artist, is now underway and you are invited to vote for your favourite painting, sketch or photograph. All submissions are from Canadian artists aged 16 to 19, and represent a wide array of styles and expressions.

The exhibit William Kurelek: the Messenger will be showing at the Art Gallery of Hamilton from January 28-April 29. The touring exhibit is collaboration between the Winnipeg Art Gallery, the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria and the Art Gallery of Hamilton.
The Stoney Creek Food Bank has new headquarters in downtown Stoney Creek; they are finding that the new location is bringing in more people than usual since opening last month.
The Ontario Credit Union Charitable Foundation has been recognized as Ontario’s 2011 Distinguished Co-operator. The award was given out at the Co-op Conference and Gala on October 19. The 11th annual gala recognized several organizations that have benefitted the co-op movement in Ontario.
The American company Target announced in early 2011 that they had acquired several store leases from Zellers and would be converting them into Target stores beginning in March 2013; the company hopes to convert between 125 and 135 Zellers stores by 2017. With that goal in mind, Target has recently acquired the leases of four more Zellers stores in the Hamilton area, including the one at Queenston Place in Stoney Creek. It will be difficult for many to see a store chain that has been a Canadian institution for several decades taken over by an American company.
The Christie Classic Antique Show will take place on September 10 from 8 am until 5 pm. It will be held on the grounds of the Christie Lake Conservation Area in Dundas. Those in nearby Stoney Creek might want to head out there to check it out, as among the items that will be for sale will be vintage postcards; those in the printing industry will no doubt be interested to examine how postcard printing has changed over the years.
